Two articles changed address, and most of your book did not

The nine chapters are the nine chapters. A short list of articles changed number, and inside a handful of articles the sections slid down behind two new ones. Everything else is where you left it.

What actually happened

The 2026 edition moved articles and left the chapters alone. There is still an introduction and there are still nine chapters, and the titles on the first four are the ones you already know.

Chapter 1 is where the change lands. It used to hold two articles, 100 Definitions and 110 Requirements for Electrical Installations. It now holds four. Article 120 came in from Chapter 2 and Article 130 came in from Chapter 7.

The move with the widest reach is load calculations. Branch-circuit, feeder and service load calculations left Article 220 and are now Article 120, and Article 220 is vacant in the 2026 book. Every citation anyone memorized for a load calculation now points at nothing.

That is an address change, not a rewrite of the arithmetic. It is also not a guarantee that every rule inside came across word for word, so read the new article rather than assuming it.

Why a change of address is worse than a change of rule

A rule change affects the people doing that specific thing. A number change affects everyone who ever learned where something lives.

For an inspector or a working electrician the cost is a few seconds of confusion, repeated. The worse case is the number that is still occupied, because there is real text at the old address and it takes a while to notice it is answering a different question.

And every piece of training material written before this edition points at the old numbers, including material being sold right now as current.

Four of those old addresses are still occupied, which is the expensive kind. 450.3 is now Reconditioned Equipment with both of its subsections reserved, so a tab there lands on a heading with nothing under it. 300.4 is now Limitations, and it gained a subsection this cycle about conductors and wiring methods no longer fit for use after overheating, fire, corrosion or water, so somebody hunting the damage rule lands on a subsection about damage and reads a while before noticing. 312.6 holds something we have not read. Article 750 still exists with a different subject under it.

The 250.24 move is the quietest of the six. The load-side rule that was 250.24(A)(5) is now 250.24(B), because 250.24(A) runs (A)(1) through (A)(4) and stops, and every lettered subsection behind it shifted down one. Main Bonding Jumper is now (C). Grounded Conductor Brought to Service Equipment is now (D).

Separately, Article 235 is gone from the 2026 book. The branch circuit, feeder and service material for systems over 1000 volts is spread across Articles 265 through 268, with grounding and bonding at 270. That is the lookup a 2023 book owner is most likely to make and fail, because their book keeps all of it in one place.

Why some section numbers slid and others did not

The 2026 edition ran a template through many articles, putting Listing Requirements at .2 and Reconditioned Equipment at .3. What it did to the numbers behind them depends entirely on whether those two slots were already empty.

Article 410 is the clean case of the template dropping into empty space. It now opens with 410.2 Listing Requirements and 410.3 Reconditioned Equipment, and the rest of the article kept the numbers it had. The horticultural lighting ground-fault section is still 410.184 and germicidal luminaire listing is still 410.191.

Article 450 is the clean case of the template pushing. Its .2 and .3 now hold the template headings, both reserved, and transformer overcurrent protection slid two places from 450.3 to 450.5, taking its two tables with it.

So there is no single offset for the edition. Article 300 shifted by two, Article 312 by three, Article 410 by nothing at all. Take the offset you need from the table of contents in front of you and never carry one article's offset into another.

Two unit loads, two section numbers

The general lighting unit load for a dwelling is not one figure, and the pair now sit at two addresses in the new article.

One dwelling, two figures, and they sit in different parts of Article 120 so you cannot see both at once. Anyone telling you the answer is a single number is working from a summary rather than from the code.

Read both sections in your own book. A wrong constant here propagates through every line of a load calculation and produces an answer that looks entirely reasonable.

A section number that stayed while the rule under it changed

90.3, the arrangement of the whole book

The old rule set Chapter 8 apart. Communications systems were not subject to the other chapters except where a requirement was specifically referenced in Chapter 8. That carve-out is not in the 2026 wording.

90.3 now says the code is divided into an introduction and nine chapters, that Chapters 1 through 4 apply generally, that Chapters 5 through 8 may supplement or modify the requirements in Chapters 1 through 7, and that Chapter 9 is tables applicable as referenced. Chapter 8 is inside the group now rather than beside it.

The number did not move, so nothing about your tabs breaks. What breaks is the habit of treating a Chapter 8 job as exempt from the front of the book.

What to do with a tabbed book

  1. Move the 220 tab to 120 and the 750 tab to 130.
  2. Check the six lines in the table above against your own tabs, and leave every other tab where it is.
  3. Do not re-cut your chapter tabs. The chapter numbers are the same nine they have always been.
  4. Tab 120.13 and 120.41 separately, because they are the two you will actually turn to and they are not adjacent.
  5. If you are buying a new book, tab it from the current table of contents and ignore any tab list published before this edition.

Anyone telling you that a 2026 book makes a whole tab set worthless has not compared the two tables of contents. Most article numbers came through this edition untouched, and throwing away a set you can navigate in the dark to fix six lines is a bad trade.

What did not move

Ampacity is still Article 310. Overcurrent is still Article 240. Grounding and bonding is still Article 250. Motors are still Article 430. Boxes are still Article 314. Chapter 9 is still the tables.

The article-level moves cluster at two ends of the book. The front, where Chapter 1 took in load calculations and energy management, and the back, where the limited-energy and communications material was rebuilt across the 720s and the old Chapter 8 articles went away. Chapters 3 through 6 came through with far less disturbance than either.

That is the useful shape of it. The relearning is concentrated, not spread evenly, and knowing where it is concentrated is most of the saving.
